I need some tips. Got a 1710 with a twin Kohler 17 hp. I notice that a rubber or plastic sleeve that the starter chaft( the bendix ) runs inside is shot. Half of it is gone. The sheet metal cowling is in the way to get to the starter and there are two screw bolts on the underneath side of the cowling I can't get to, to get the cowling off. Am I going about this backwards? How do you get the starter off? Thanks in advance,
Tim

Venda2; Thanks for the reply,I was afraid of that.I have gotten by without a shop manual for this one 'til now.Can I get to it by just loosening the motor to raise it enough, or do I have to split it?

I had to unbolt the engine to gain access to the bolts you are talking about. I tried to find a better way but once you give in and unbolt the engine it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Also that bendix is cheaper if you can get it from a starter re-builder instead of a Kohler dealer.
