Vapourising oil

Probably this is for the UK guys mainly.

I have a TED20 that I have been running on straight heating oil (28 seceond gas oil to be technically precise about it) sometimes with a bit of petrol added to help it ignite. It seems to run quite happily but wonder if it could be doing any harm and whether really should be making up the TVO mix from one of the many recipes that are around instead?

Main thing I can see that is different with the recipes (e.g. the one James UK posted last week) is the added oil and (sometimes diesel) in the mix. Is this to because the paraffin will tend to wash oil from the cylinder walls more readily than if one was to run on straight petrol?

Morning David,

I agree with Peter on the upper cylinder lubrication.

But be careful using diesel - I thought a drop of red would be cheaper than using oil, but I suffered loss of power and oily plugs, so I'm back to oil.

The other thing I used was LRP in the mix - but of course lead wasn't added to petrol back in the early 50s, so now I use the cheaper unleaded. So far so good.

David, I wouldn't run your tractor on straight kerosene, as you suspect, this will wash the oil from the cylinder walls and eventually pass the rings and dilute the sump oil. The reason diesel oil or oil is added to the mix is to act as an upper cylinder lubricant, the petrol is there to increase the igniting properties of the kerosene.
