I have a 1956 Farmall 300 and recently rebuilt a tired engine. I had the head work done by a reputable machine shop, installed new pistons, rings and sleeves. After about 100 hours of lug work the motor still puts out blue smoke but does not noticeably use oil. I would have thought the rings would have set by now. I find the smoke really annoying this has been a great machine for the 32 years we've owned it, it never smoked or used oil before the motor work although getting the power back is a major plus. Any suggestions?

If the oil u are using in the air filter is too thin, it can easily be sucked into the engine, as if the level is too high. Try running it without (ugh), a filter for a minute or two to eliminate that possiblity, Of course do this on a calm day and clean conditions, I would put an old sock or something over it to help keep it clean for the minute or so it is running, That would be a sure way to eliminate the air filter as being the culprit.

Lots of others that could probably give you better ideas than me, but I'll ask a few questions and suggest a few things, and probably show how dumb I am.

Have you checked your plugs? I'd assume that they are showing carbon, but is there oil showing on one/all of them?

How's your compression? Do you have one cylinder showing low?

Are you sure you aren't pulling oil out of the air cleaner somehow - might look at the oil level in it.

Have you retorqued the head and adjusted the valves since the engine was rebuilt? If you haven't, you're overdue at 100 hours (IMHO).

I'd think that the problem most likely should show up in just one cylinder - you can probably figure out which one. If all show up bad, may be something external to the engine.

Good luck. Please post any results of your investigations.

Thanks for the input! I have checked the plugs and they are all a darker grey than the lite grey of old but I thought that it may just be a richer carb setting. I did retorque the head and tweak the lifter settings but virtually no change was needed. Compression on all cylinders is normal. The lite blue smoke that I get is not puffing like its from one cylinder either its quite even. Your point of maybe over fill of the air cleaner is interesting I'll check it this weekend. I have had several older timers than me say that new rings take alot of lugging hours to set and seal properly. I just hate to blow smoke!
