Most of the time the blood that flows in my veins is Persion Orange but in this case I am very close to buying a Farmall 400. Can you good folks that wear the red hats tell me the goods and bads of the 400. The one I am looking at seems to be in good condition but I don't know that much about them. It will be used on the farm for gereral farm work. Thanks for your help.

my dad bought a 400 new and we hane been using ever since. right now we use it to pull our field sprayer for 300 acres. we have changed it over to a 12 volt system which helps alot.also added power steering. if it has a two fast hitch the down pressure is great for a lot of stuff

You'll love it. It most likely has power steering, TA, IPTO and fast hitch which are handy. One thing you may want to check is to see if the low side of the TA is good, but you don't necesarily need to have the low side working. I'm just gettin the restoration of mine finished up. Gook luck with it.

The weakest partof the number series was the TA, but if used right and the oil changed in the transmission regularly (Hy-Tran) they wwill last a long time. Get a manual for it and it will explain how touse it and adjust it. We had a 350 and had very little trouble. Pulled 3-16 plow all the time.

I have a 400 and really like it. I use it for raking and baling and blading my drive. I like the three sets of hydraulic outlets, real handy. Good luck.

A old friend of mine that past away a few years ago said that when IH came out with the 400 that they finally got it right. He bought 4 of them. 2 diesel and 2 gas. I have one of the gas tractors and did an out of frame overhaul on it about 10 years ago. This is after the tractor sat in the grove for about 15 years. I plow about 20 to 40 acres a year with it, mow, rake and bale about 2000 bales of hay a year, and a neighbor used it to pull a six row 7000 JD planter and planted about 300 acres a year with it for the last two years. I also put a loader on it in the winter and keep my place free of snow here in north Iowa. I haven’t done anything to the tractor except change oil and put a new regulator on it since then. I am going to have to spilt it and put a new TA in it. The TA is not bad just the overriding clutch in it and it was starting to go out of it when I got it running, but since I going to have it apart I’m going to go all the way. I have 4 1/8 high dome pistons in it witch makes it a little hard to start in the winter (so I have heater on it,) and it sometimes wants to diesel when you shut it down when its hot. But it’s got lots of power and it handles 3-16 fast hitch plow just fine in this Black dirt. (I have never seen dirt that plows as hard as this ground. I plow the same speed as my neighbor does with his 5020 pulling 5-16s) I also pull a 14' wheel disk and a 12' field cultivator with no trouble. If you are going to go Red!!! This is the tractor to do it with.

In my opinion, they are very dependable, smooth operating tractors. If you can adjust to seeing red, try it, you will like it! Good Luck, Bill

My Dad bought our 400 in 57or 58 it had a Marbeet 1 row beet digger on it, we did our own beets and did some custom work intill 68, took the Marbeet off and put a single front end and culvater bars on and got into dry beans, doing 2 to 300 ac's a year with it.
It's been a good machine although we have overhauled the moter the ta, and put 1 ring and pinion in it, but not bad for a 43 yr old tractor.
A few years ago I put a heavy duty 3 pt on it and now use it in row crops pulling a sled planter and 6 row bedder, and a 10 ft fail mower, finally had to weight the front end to keep it on the ground till now that was the only tractor that we had that never got lite in the front end.I would'nt trade it for anything else from that time period.
