I have recently bought a 1960 560G which seems
to be in really great condition. I have several
questions about it.

1.I saw where the D model's weight is about 5800
pounds, is that about the same of the gas ?

2. Which would have more power and dependability?

3. Would the 1960 model probably have had the
upgrade in the transmission or not?
Thanks everybody!

we have both we prefer the gas simply because it starts very easy every time winter summer cold or hot the diesel is a good strong engine but did tend to start hard most the time since the rebuild this was decressed alot and installtion of a block heater aftermarket if you plan on using alot in winter go the gas just keep a eye on the manifolds they warp bad fix leaks hear fast we have learned good luck great tractors

the gas is the better tractor.the diesels were notorious for having probs with heads. a prime example is you cannot make a gas engine into an instant diuesel without some engineeing changes.if you may recall gen motors had the same probs with the early 5.7's in the late 70's.

Doubt if there's any appreciable difference.

2. Which would have more power and dependability?

There's only a couple hp difference. The gas is a far better engine in my opinion (based on experience). The 560 (and 460) diesels have chronic problems with leaking heads. This can be solved by having BOTH the head and block shaved to perfect flatness

The factory started using the improved bearings and parts with 560 serial # 23926 and 660 serial # 2727.

Disregard the above post from me. The following is correct. The factory started using the improved bearings and parts with Farmall 560 serial # 23926 and International 560 serial # 2727. The 660 has number breaks at 3430, 4258, and, 4636 for various parts. Email me if you need more info.

I can just pass on what I have learned here. Maybe others can give you more and better information.

Weight, power, and dependability would be about equal between gas and diesel. Gas starts easier in the winter. Gas is easier and cheaper to maintain. Diesel will last longer and be more fuel-efficient all other things being equal. Incidentally, IH used the same diesel engine for later model tractors.

Now for tricky part - the upgrade was in the rear end. If it has been completed by a dealer there should be a triangular punch mark on the serial number plate. It didn't get done at the factory.
