I have a '51 M that was converted to a 12 volt electrical system. What all do I need to do to revert to a 6 volt system. Obviously, I need a 6 volt batter, generator and regulator. Also, the wiring is trash, so I'll be replacing everything. What guage wire should I use? Is it worth it to order a harness instead of making it all up from scratch? If anyone could upload a detailed and labelled wiring diagram, that would also be handy. What am I forgetting? Any advice is welcome as I'm pretty new to this whole thing. Thanks.

Going back to the 6-volt system tells me you are wanting it back original so iwould put a factory harness back in it,after you see the harness you will probaly see where most everthing goes.

IH dealer price was about $44.00 for both harness'(2 required, 1 for ignition and 1 for lighting) for my 50 M. I'm going to leave mine 6 volt but I have an new 8 volt battery in it (better cranking)

I didn't see where anybody mentioned it, but you'll want to check out what the igniton system is up to.
If you've got a magneto system leave it alone, its fine, if its a coil system you should find that there is either a resistor somewhere to step down the voltage to the coil, or that the coil has been swapped all together.
A 12v coil on 6v, I dunno for sure, but I would guess it isn't worth a darn.

I wouldn't change back to 6 volt. I would just repair the 12 volt system, before going back to 6 volt.

John, currently where is your voltage regulator located? On the rear gas tank support being a 1951? There are two different schematics.

Contact Jim on the wiring harness. The last info I had was that they were $75 plus shipping.
You might want to try your local Case-IH dealer first, I've heard that they still have the harnesses in stock and they are a little less expensive.
In addition to the parts you mentioned and the harness, you will need 1 Ga. battery cables. There should be three cables, one for the ground, one from the battery to the starter switch and one from the switch to the starter. I would also recommend that you replace the starter switch. This could've been the main reason the conversion was made, as they will drop a lot of voltage after they get a little burned on the contacts.

Good luck,
Phil
