Hello all,

I am looking for replacements of a couple of bent push rods from my IH 340. Any ideas where I can track these down? I am rebuilding the engine.

Many Thanks

Dan

I'm with rusty. I couldn't find rods for my 140, so I straightened the old ones gently and patiently. Working great and should be alright since I adjusted the valves correctly while I was in there.

I'll tell you this. Yeah you can straighten em BUT generally it is a bad idea. Pushrods are heat treated and generally when bent are not as strong the next time around as they were from the get go. You can get a new set of pushrods from a racing warehouse like Summit Racing or Jegs for about $25-$40 for a set of 16. Now, obviously you need to get the proper length and the proper diameter. Plus you can get custom lengths too (not sure on the price of custom lengths though) so you aren't limited to reusing something or buying new ones at $15 a crack.

The pushrods in these old tractor engines are NOT heat treated, except for the very ends where the wear occurs. I've straightened out pushrods from tractor engines and all of them are still going strong 10 years later.

Unless those pushrods are seriously bent, you can straighten them. Lay them down on a hard, flat surface and gently strike them with a hammer. When you think they are straight, roll them across that flat surface, and if there is no wobble, you are done. If it still wobbles a bit, use the hammer some more. It'll last just as long as a new one.

I had a surprisingly hard time finding replacement rods for those bent on my 240. I found them from an IH dealer in PA (Hoober.com). New were $20 each, but they also sell used for $10.
