Friend of mine brought over a cub he just came by. Could not get it to start. Had spark to plugs. After a few attempts we noticed that the exhaust was sucking in air instead of putting out exhaust air. Can't figure out what causes this problem and how to correct it. We know the fellow who had it before had replaced the head gasket and also switched from a mag to distributor set up. Still 6 volts. He never did get it running. Any ideas to what is going on and how to correct will be appreciated.

What is the compression readings. You will need to see in the cycl thru the spark plug hole as it sounds like you have to start from the first square as lots of things could be out of whack. With the side panel behind the carb off you can see the valve movement.

The camshaft rotates at half of crankshaft speed, so as long as the timing is correct in relation to the camshaft, you cannot be half a turn off on the camshaft.

Take off the valve cover and check the valve adjustment. Also check the firing order and timing.
