I have a C (1948) with cracks in the block between the coolant holes similar to the description given by "riverbend" in an earlier response. The cracks starts between the coolant hole (carburetor side) located between the first and second cylinder, runs to the 2nd cylinder hole then to the middle coolant holes then to the third cylinder hole and appears to stop at the coolant hole between the third and forth cylinder. The tractor was not in running condition when I started the rehab project. The radiator was full and the condition of the antifreeze looked to be clean. I could not detect any antifreeze in the oil when I drained it. I am planning to take the block to a machine shop and thought that they could magna flux the block for additional cracks and then grin into the cracks and weld. Based on the conditions, I described can the block be repaired? What am I looking regarding cost? Any recommendations on how to best to proceed?

John's Precision Machine in Buffalo charged me about $90 to clean out the block and rebore the holes for the sleeves.

The going price for a block for a Super C is about $400 plus shipping. Lots of them are cracked the same way mine was. Decent C blocks might be more plentiful.

Should find a good used block for 150 or so.

Had A with crack between coolant holes. Scratched my head until old timer tole me holes are common and go to the same place. Mean nothing in my case. New head gasket, put it together. Running for 10 years. Unless you are planning to enter tractor pull, might be OK.

Magnaflux is a good idea. No sense not fixing all the cracks. My block appears to have been frozen. Everything on the carb side was pushed out. The block was welded by the guys who ground the crank, Engelke Engineering in Lester Prairie, MN. Their spray welding set up looked like a litle paint cup on a oxy-acetylene (sp?) torch. They also have a big oven.

The quoted cost was $12 per inch. Shot blasting (ruined the governor bushing), Welding the deck and the webs under the deck, milling the deck, and brazing the external crack behind the carb was $288.

Cycling the block in and out of the oven may have affected the shape a little. Refitting the main caps was a little fiddly to get the crank to turn easily.
