I bought this 350 about 1 year ago and have had trouble starting it all along. Now it wont turn over at all. It happened once before and I was able to move it a little in 5th gear to move the starter and then it would turn over. Now it has happened again but I have tried the same thing and it isnt working! Any suggestions on how to solve this problem. does anyone know where I can buy a new starter or starter solenoid or both?

Hi Chuck, starter lockup is a common problem with this series of tractors. We bought a 300U new in 1957 and it would lockup every once and a while. Neighbour bought a 350U new in 1958 and it would do the same thing. Sometimes rocking in 5th gear would unlock the starter but other times just loosen the mounting bolts on the stater a couple turns, wiggle the starter motor and it would release. Over the years your ring gear and starter drive have probably become worn so problem happens more frequently.

Chuck: CNKS is correct; you are dealing with worn out part(s). Either the flywheel ring gear is shot, or the starter bendix is shot. Once you correct this, your tractor will be a lot more enjoyable to use. I'd start with the starter, since replacing (or turning around) the ring gear involves splitting the tractor. There is a new design, improved starter drive available from Case/IH dealers which, I am told, covers a multitude of sins with regard to wear on the ring gear. I suggest that first. Good luck. mike

The starter drive gear and/or the teeth on the flywheel are worn. You might try a new drive gear, that is the simplist, otherwise you need a new ring gear, which will require splitting the tractor. To limp along, loosen the starter, and move the tractor manually a little -- has the same effect as putting it in 5th. You can also jack one rear wheel up and try to turn the wheel while in 5th -- easier than pushing the whole tractor. Starter or solenoid could be shot, but I doubt it. Try the other things first.
