Gents,

I need to replace the brake linings, etc, on my farmall A. Can someone walk thru the step by step for disassembly and replacement. I dont have a manual, do I need one for this job ?

One other thing, this tractor has apparently been used mostly for mowing, I say that because in 3rd gear there seems to be a lot of gear noise. Is it common to find just one gear worn more than others and if so what do you do about it ?

The band will come off with the final drive.

Be very careful when jacking an offset tractor. An shift in weight can cause the tractor to tip over. Be sure to wedge up the front axle as shown in the operators manual (figures 51A & B):

Thanks Daniel and Rnicholas.
I'll be using an engine hoist, but I needed to know how far away from the tractor it will have to roll. I don't have much room, so I'll have to move the tractor to one side, then the other, to get each one done.

It's not just a repair. It's an adventure!

I'd get the manual. It'll come in useful for other fixes as well. It's tough to give a step-by-step without covering everything and without knowledge of how mechanically inclined you might be. One thing's for sure. The rear housing has to come off and they are heavy. Make sure you don't try to manhandle them. This is why so many of the old tractors need to have them replaced. It wasn't a simple process. Plus they usually wore out unevenly--the left side because of the extra weight or the right because they were lighter and had to be braked harder for a sharper turn. If the tractor was used for a lot of row crop tillage where the two rears were not locked together, it wore them out quicker. I never knew my grandad or great uncles to change them even though you'd have to stand on the brake pedal on one side or the other to get some braking out of it.

Good timing. I was ready to post with the same questions. I have a Super-A, and I think I broke a brake band. The pedal bottoms out with no 'grab' at all.
I've been studying the sectional view in my I&T manual. Since the drum is pinned to the diff. shaft with a set screw, I'm supposing the differential shaft has to come out with the axle housing. I'm also supposing the 'how's' of getting at the seals will be self-evident once it's off. My question- will I be extracting the drum from the center loop of the brake band, leaving the band behind with the tractor to be removed separately? Or does the band come out with the drum?

If you intend to do any work to the tractor a manual can be very useful although the brakes are a fairly simple job. It start getting more complicated when you replace the seals (highly recommended) and disassemble the final drives.

As to the noisy gear, as long as it is just gear whine and not a bad bearing it'll probably last a very long time yet. Hope this helps, tractorsam
