wet sleeve question/blown head gasket

As you know, I blew the head gasket on my super A. I have the head at a shop. Looking at the deck surface of the block, The sleeves are up enough to catch your fingernail. When I put a straight edge on the block, I can get gaps .006 at most. Is this too much for the bi-layer felpro gasket? Are my sleeves walking out? Is this why I blew the head gasket?? When I bought the tractor this spring, it was leaking water underneath the head so I put a new head gasket on. Its just 5 months old now and was running fine untill last week.

Thanks for the help.

You might want to check the top deck of your block for cracks between the two middle coolant holes on the right (carburator) side. See if the cracks extend into the bores for the sleeves.

Too bad you just didn't retorque the head nuts with the engine warm a couple of times instead of tearing it down!

(Don't forget to reset the valves!)

The spec. is .003" - .005" with an absolute max of .007" on the sleeve protrusion. Define "blown",the usual consequence of sleeves sticking up too high is coolant leakage.

I think you need the slight lift on the sleeves to seal the compression rings on the head gasket. When you replaced the head gasket did you torque it to 80 lbs, then retorque it after you ran it? If you didn't it will suprise you when you do. I got another 1/4 turn when I retorqued mine. Good Luck,
Charles

Yes, I retorqued it after I ran it. Maybe I should have retorqued it twice? Ive never heard of retorqeing a head after you have water leakage and it working. Once you get water creeping out of the head, I always thought your were done. It sounds like .006 is exceptable for the deck of my block. When I get the head back from the machine shop, Ill bolt her on and see what happens.
