I have 2 of them, one has 12000 hours and by the looks of it the other one has a lot more. Both have been great tractors and still run good. The one with 12000 hours has only had clutch, ta, and brakes in the twenty years I've had it. Lee

Ya better go buy it Dave 'cause it sure hasn't been hurt on 80 acres. Heck of a good tractor.

If the hours are correct and it is in really good shape otherwise, it could be worth up to $15,000.

856 in general I've seen go for anywhere from $4000 to $15000.

As for what to watch out for, not much! These were some of the last over-built tractors from IH. Our 1256 held up to a lot of abuse as our main loader tractor for feeding cattle, and use in the field, etc. No transmission, engine, or rearend trouble at all. The TA went out shortly after we got it (around 6500 hours) and we put a few clutches in it due to the abuse from the loader.

If it starts good when cold and doesn't smoke for more than a few minutes and the TA works, shift through all the gears and listen for noises, the usual stuff...

2800 hours is extremely low. You need to verify that somehow. Other than that, the 856 was one of the best ever built by IH. No weak spots or problem areas.

If the hours are correct, and with the accessories that come with it, I'd say the value would be in the 8 to 10 thousand dollar category.
