OK I'm wondering what you guys think about how often we should change the oil in our "show" tractors. I have three ( SC , SAV AND MV )none of which are driven more than a couple of hours per year. I have heard that the only thing bad about old oil is that some of the additives break down over time but I doubt that these additives even existed back in the 40's and 50's so maybe thats not an issue? I'm thinking that as long as the oil looks good leave it alone for 5 years or so. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Change the oil and filter every 250 running hours or once a season.

I would watch what the oil looks like... if it's still a nice caramel brown, leave it. Black and stinky - change it!

I've had the same oil in my F12 and F14 for about seven years now. The ones we use about 25 hours a year get changed every other year.

Agree on the water problem. Just loosening the plug a little until you see a bit of water will let the water drip out slowly--it's thinner than oil and will get past the threads. Careful--you can get a faceful of oil if you go too far!

Bud: If I were doing as you are, less than 5 hours per year, I'd drill the pan drain plug and put it a 1/4" water drain. For your use the oil would last a lifetime, if it weren't for condensation. After tractor has been parked for a month, you could drain water off the bottom. It has to be small as you want the flow very slow so it will drain off water without creating disturbance within the oil pan.

We do the very same thing with our sediment bowls, water settles out in bowl and we drain it off. No reason why we can't do the same with oil.

Don: That is exactly what I had in mind. By the way if you happen to drill that hole in the plug, then don't like the idea, those plugs are still available at CaseIH.

Hugh
I live close to Dallas and only run the tractors on warm days in the summer so I'm thinking it unlikely that I would be susceptable to condensation. I would think condensation would occur when you shut down a warm tractor on cold days? Do you think I'm missing something here? Thanks Bud

Bud: Condensation is funny, around here it seems worse when not using tractors and one is getting a lot of temperature fluctuation. Humidity in a given area also has to be a factor. I do know one thing for certain, it hits when you least expect it.

Probably depends where you live. I sometimes crack the plag to see if there is any moisture but have tractors that haven't had the oil changed in years. They are not gonna wear out if you don't run them. But a little water in the pan does bad things.

I am more concerned with condensation than oil break down. I change once a year and it is getting more expensive.
