My planter is not planting ??? Everything seems to work ,the drum turns raises lowers ,markers ,have a new 1000 rpm pto pump .It appaers that I am not getting enough air pressure to the drum to hold seads in the dimpple long enough to get to the press off wheels and drop the seed . The seed will travel to the 12 0'clock possition and fall off . I have replaced the flow control valve and have turned it all the way in giving max flow to the orbit motor to turn the fan(blower) .The rubber back seal is in good shape and have taken out a shim to bring it closer to firewall.Have checked oil in pump it is full . It seems that the fan does not put out enough air or I have a major air leak somewhere that I can not find . Have beat my head in all day , any sujestions good or bad may be considered . It is time to plant at least here.

I had a problem with my 400 planter last year. Had the drum pressure in the range where it should be, but would not plant. Tried every adjustment, put graphite on the corn, still would not plant. Then I took the chute apart. It blew corn and graphite out, I had too much pressure. I slowed the pto rpm's a bit and it planted fine. I think the gage is not reading right as it isn't reading as high as it should. Could have some dirt in it? Just another tip.

A couple of things come to mind-
1. The seal between the fiberglass top hopper and the metal bottom hopper must be good. Just a little air leaking around part of that joint can cause excessive air loss. In a pinch, caulking around the inside of the joint can get you by for a while. Most of those 800's are old enough now that the fiberglass top needs replaced-did mine 2 years ago for the exact same reason.
2. You say you just replaced the 1000 rpm pump-what caused that? May give us some ideas on current problem. My experience is on 540 rpm pumps.

Asked my brother[runs the planter] & he said the seed tags will tell what pressure to run. He said 10 oz. or a little more.

We had the top half of the hopper start to crack around the lid so we had to get some of that so it yourself fiberglass stuff and fix it. Probably not your problem, i'm just sharing. Those things are getting old.

Formerly's comment about the brush could be the thing to try. Are you planting large rounds? If so, hook the brush up so it's away from the drum. The brush might be knocking the big seed off the drum. The brush is only for small seed where you might be getting 2 seeds in each dimple.

Check the fiberglass hopper top for cracks/ breaks around the top. Ours got cracked from dumping seed bags/ laying seed bags on the hopper top to dump them. Had to pop rivet a new one on. Look for an air leak anywhere. The rubber wheels have to be rolling on the drum to get the seeds released.

It is probably your fan motor under the hopper, replaced mine a few years ago, when pressure was not building up. I thought it was the pump first, but that little motor can go bad too., You just need to loosen the two mounting bolts some then turn it and pull it down. The pump mount has slotted holes. When you put it back on put some grease on the shaft and push it back up.It was around 200 bucks from the IH a few years ago, don't recommend one from the salvage yard, i went that route and it was worse than the one i had. Like the others said, check your lid make sure it is sealed and make sure your wheels are down and don't have any holes in them, also check those plastic ends on the black wheel ends, they wear through and break some time, but sounds like you mainly have motor or pressure problem.hope you get it figured out.

At what rpms are you checking it?

Maybe you have to keep the rpms up on the tractor.

Do you have rubber bands on the unused rows?

How much air have ya got?

Also, along with Gary's thought, have ya got the plugs in the unused rows at the manifold?

Again,

You're not sittin' that planter down at a standstill are ya? Under certain moisture conditions, that will plug those runners tight.

If you just acquired this planter do you know that you have to have the little rubber wheels raised up away from the seed drum for it to plant seeds. Hope its that simple.

how much pressure is the gauge reading? i think it should be around 8 oz. how much does the seed weigh per bag/bushel? over 55-60# is trouble. if the seed is too heavy, you need to hook the wiper brush back away from the drum. if you can't get 8 oz pressure, the lid seal could be leaking, the drum seal may be worn, the hopper may be cracked. there are probably more possibilities that i'm not thinking of right now.
