HELP too much oil pressure

Just started mowing. My Super A with woods mower was running about 10 minutes total when I started to notice loss in power. Tractor was bogging down, gov. wasnt kicking in as should. Stoped the tractor and shut down mower. Tractor would only run at low RPM, I would move the throttle and no responce. Thought linkage was unhooked, I scanned the oil pressure gauge and it was barried on high. Even a low Idle, pressure was barried on high. Oil was creeping out of the oil filter houseing, and I noticed I blew a head gasket, water leaking out between the head and block. What can this be? I just changed the oil and filter 2 weeks ago and mowed 2 acres afterwards with no engine problems. This is a new tractor to me. I used detergent oil, straight 30 wt. If it had non detergent in it before, could the cleaning action of the new detergent oil have got some oil scum moved around and pluged up something? My book says there is a oil pressure regulator spring in the oil pump, should I tear down the pump and look at this spring? Any advice is appreciated. I hope I didnt ruin anything.

I just took the head into a machine shop to get looked at. I figured that is the one for sure thing I know is wrong so Ill see what they find then go from there before tearing into the oil pump. I also did a compression test before the head came off. I got 90, 50, 25, 50 Lbs on the individual cylinders. Could the compression loss be because Im pumping compression into the block which is being shown on the oil pressure gauge??

The bright side, fired up the cub for the first time this year, mowed 2 acres with it, without any problems. Its good to have a spare tractor sometimes.

The crankcase is vented to atmosphere, so not too likely. Could be that combustion pressure is getting into the oil feed for the head, but still unlikely. I'd try a different gauge (higher pressure) and see what happens.

1.) Try re-torquing the head.

2.) Did what's left of a previous gasket out of the groove under the oil fuilter.

3.) Then test the oil opressure with a "master gauge".

It seems that the head gasket is blown, probably because the head is warped or the deck is uneven. The head gasket is leaking compression into the pan and oil galleries and is boosting the oil pressure. Time to bite the bullet and check out the head.

I doubt it. I don't think the oil pressure is your problem. Might be a side effect of the gasket problem, maybe not. I'd fix the head first and then check the oil pressure with a good gauge and see what you really have. And outside the chance you got a defective gasket or damaged it installing. Look for other problems, uneaven head or block surface or cracks etc.

Well blown head gasket means water in the oil and water in the oil can/will clog up relief vales and all sorts of other thing plus also blow engines. First fix the blown head gasket, change the oil and filter then go from there

No water in oil. Im thinking that the increased pressure is what blew the head gasket, not the other way around. I just put a new head gasket on 5 months ago. Would you go straight for the oil pump and look at the regulator valve? Why would I loose power like I did?

It is possible but not very likely that you have enough oil pressure to blow the head gasket. While the psi could be very high, the passage is very small, i.e. there is not much force there.

Chances are that there is a defect in the head, the block, the gasket, or sorry to say, the installation, that is causing the gasket to fail.

The last major repair was the head gasket, so that is the first place to look. It won't hurt to have a look at the oil pump, check the pressure relief spring (they get tired usually), clean up the end plate, replace the gasket, etc., but it sounds like the head gasket failed twice in six months. Something is not right higher up in the motor.

Blown head gasket will cause loose of one or more cylinders and that will cause loose of power big time.
