Water problem

I ran into a strange problem with my recently acquired Farmall H last week. It had run fine since I got it, maybe a week before this, but we had heavy rains for a couple of days and when I went out to fire it up after that, a bunch of water sprayed out of the exhaust stack when I went to start it. then stuff was running out of the bottom of the carb when I'd crank it. Smelled like gasoline, but it didn't stop when I shut off the fuel petcock. After that finally cleared, the tractor started and ran ok, but when I checked the engine oil, there was a -lot- of water in it.

Now, we'd had heavy wind-driven rains, and the tractor had been left outside during the storm, but there was a soup can over the exhaust pipe so I don't see how water could have gotten in that way. The coolant level in the radiator didn't look any lower then it'd been before, and the watery oil didn't smell like antifreeze.

I changed the oil and it doesn't appear to be getting any worse, but I'm trying to figure out how water could have gotten into the engine from a rain. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Greg

Have had it happen several times in my life already. If the pipe into the manifold fits loosely (or sometimes not even loose!) the water runs down the muffler and into the manifold.

Some type of putty or high-temp sealer on the threads of the pipe should solve the problem.

I try to start my tractors up as soon as possible after a rain to clear out any water that might have gotten in.

No carbon: Haha!
Thanks. I will probably look into plugging up the leak. It's a pain having to deal with the watery oil if the tractor gets left out (or having to run out there with a tarp at the slightest sign of clouds).
Thanks,

Greg

That's good news. I guess I'll have to clean out some space in the barn to keep it to prevent this from happening again.
Is there some way to seal the top of the manifold to prevent it from doing that?

Thanks,

Greg

A friend of mine had that type of problem on his 450. What I did to fix it was got some muffler putty from an auto parts tore and put it around where the pipe and the manifold hook up and then he has no more ware problems. Another way to stop it is to make a flange that can be welded to the pipe just above the manifold so the water will run off to the side either one works. One good thing it you should have little or no carbon build up in the engine now

Common problem on a lot of old tractors. What happens is the water runs down off that can down the muffler and then into to manifold where the pipe goes in to it. Then from there into what ever cylinder has an open exhaust valve and then down into the oil. As far as what came out of the carb its a mix of gas and water again from the water getting into a cylinder with and open intake valve. No big deal as long as you changed the oil and have got it running and let it run till it was good an warm so as to dry it out
