On a recently purchased 140 all the gears work except first. As long as I hold my hand on the shift lever it works. When I remove my hand the transmission goes to neutral. What do I need to to correct this problem? The guy I bought it from said he tried to pull start it in first gear..

Vacherie: I agree with Daniel, detent balls are what hold it in gear. There are balls for each shifting rail.

Sounds like one of the detent balls is stuck. Take the cover off and examine the shifter forks. It should "click" into each gear. Put the transmission in neutral before removing the cover.
