Just bought a Super A. I was mowing a friends 4 acres with a new woods belly mower. It was doing a great job. The property was a little neglected, had some ruts in it where someone had been driving a truck through it. After going through the ruts fairly hard, I took a turn and noticed that my front axle was WAY out of control, doing its own thing, turning and pivioting far more than it should. I stopped the tractor, got off, and found the center pivot pin had slipped out, and was about 2 inches forward, not in the rear hole at all. I now know why there is a center U bolt around the axle. This U bolt was tweeked a little as it helped hold the axle in place when I took the ruts. I limped the tractor back on the trailer and took her home. Can you believe I didnt crack or break anything! How lucky was I to catch it when I did. I took the two bolts that hold the pin off the tractor, they were wore right where they catch the pin. I will replace these with grade 8 bolts or stainless steel. If you havent looked at these 2 bolts that hold this pin in, take them out and inspect them. After 60 years of use, they may be wore like mine and that center pin may just start to walk out. The pin has a small (very small) flat spot in it that the bolts slide up against to keep the pin in place. Check this on your tractor.

Ron

RJV, Grade 8 is fine, though harder than the actual pivot holes. Stainless is a little softer than (weaker) than a Grade 5. I personally do not use SS for ANYTHING structural unless corrosion is an issue. A Grade 5 or 8 with Anti-Sieze on the threads will be sufficent. If there is not a zerk drill, tap, and install one or two!
Good luck,

Charles

How many drops of oil do you put on a cub generator(3-4 or 5-6), how many times a year?

Dad lost that pivot pin on his 1256 one year... nearly tipped on its side when the axle fell off.

I was discing with a JDA, hit a washout and broke both front wheels off. They ended up under the rear axle by the time I stopped.

Don't know if you need to go to a grade 8 or SS bolts. We had the same thing on our A about 40 years ago. We put in grade 5 bolts, & never had any trouble. Our trouble was --too much grease in the pivot pin[none]. The grease zerk was broken off--sooo we didn't grease it. In fact, the pivot pin was rusted tight in the front axle & broke in the back--we had to use a hacksaw to saw through the front of the pin to get it out.

Ron: More important than those pins are the clamps, they have to be tight. If not you can shear off even new pins, they don't have to be 60 years old to break.

Clamps were tight. It took a little umph to get the bolts out. The pin just slowly wore through the bolts. You can see a nice groove in the bolts. Again, I cant believe nothing broke. That axle was really flopping around. Scared the **** out of me!!!
