Hi, I just replaced the carb with a rebuilt carb. Over the years (seven) I have had troubles with what seems like flooding, not firing on all cylinders. The tractor has been rebuilt pretty much completely. The last item was the carb. Since I have had the H, we have rarely had it run smooth. I replaced the carb and it ran smooth and slowly over the last two weeks it has gotten (the same old problem) where it sound like it is firing roughly, I smell gas, there is no power to even drag the bucket or drive up an incline in 1st gear. It will not smooth out with any amount of throttle.

With the old carb, I had someone come and clean it up put it back on, the tractor would run great for a few hours and slowly get to the place where it did not have the power to even move in 1st gear. this has been a reoccurring pattern with the old carb and new.?? What the Heck?

Any body got ideas?

There may be an issue with the coil, or distributor shaft bearings. When it is running poorly, or stops, feel the coil if it is as hot as a fresh buscuit, it is toast. Wiggle the distributor shaft (up and down, not in and out) if it has motion that can be felt with your hand, it is probably worn enough to give irratic timing. It may be able to set the points (.020") but as it turns, the cams opening the points change the gap and thus timing varies.
I point these out to make sure you are on the right rrack with the fuel issue. They can disguise each other. JimN

hi thanks for your input. I cleaned up the spark plugs, three of which were carboned up, perhaps from the last carb and I found that the distributer cap had become skewed. It now runs great. Though I still smell some gas in the exhaust.

regards,
dave

Hmmm. sounds like dirt in the fuel. Have you checked the gas tank for rust, crud, etc? Is there a screen on your sediment bowl?

hi thanks for your input. I have a fuel filter on the line and it seems clean.I will check for a screen as a precaution. Also, I cleaned up the spark plugs, three of which were carboned up, perhaps from the last carb' poor operation and I found that the distributer cap had become skewed. It now runs great. Though I still smell some gas in the exhaust.

regards,
dave

That inline fuel filter could well be your problem. Most inline filters are not made for a gravity feed fuel system - as these tractors have. You need to make certain that the filter is for GRAVITY FEED - not for a system with a fuel pump. Good luck. mike
