Some of you asked for photos, and just posted a photo of my Super A with Woods Mower in tractor photos. This is not a pro paint job, just wanted to preserve a working tractor. As one of you suggested a month back, "Hugh you'll just get it dirty." Well, I see I've already got my first scratch on the new paint. I am happy to report no leaks anywhere.

Hugh:

Excellent job, ol' buddy. Wish mine looked as good. But, as you say - it is a working tractor. You really should put some decals on it. mike

Mike: I have the tractor decals, just not satisfied with the shade of red I have on fuel tank, hood and grill. Due to a misunderstanding those items got primed with red and rest of tractor was primed with grey. Naturally they turned out a bit different. I have an advisor nearby, tells me couple more coats of paint should improve that.

For now, mowing gets rather intensive around here for next 6 weeks or so.

Hugh, it looks fantastic!! Very nice job, but now I'll have to find another pink tractor owner to rib! You shouldn't have any problem selling that mower with all the care you've given it. Except for decals, the darn thing is practically new.

Hugh,

Dang it, go ahead and get the decals. Gone this far might as well go whole hog.

I wish I had a Woods mower to go on the 140 but those things are just to expensive for me.

Anyway, the tractor and mower look good.

Randy: Here in Ontario and across the northern US you quite regularly see used Woods belly mowers in the $400. to $600. range. I paid $650. for this one, and just maybe they are not all in as good shape as this one was. This one had been on an BN, thus mounting is a bit different for SA. My biggest cost since to date has been building that mounting hardware. $300. I bought new blades ($65.) when I got it. Bought a new belt two years ago, ($60.)haven't used that yet. I put new top seals ($15.), and sandblasting was roughly $65. This will be my 6th season using it, mowing roughly 2 acres.

Some folks talk about mowing in 2nd and 3rd gear, they must have super smooth ground. If I tried that, breakage would double my mowing cost. I can only imagine the damage if one snapped off a guage wheel and it got under the mower deck before he got stopped. I notice a couple of 18hp Deere's in the neighborhood with 48" mowers and in 1st gear I'm still mowing twice the speed they are. In 1st gear I'm making close to an acre per hour, and I have about 15 trees, two hedges a barn and a drive shed to deal with.

Hugh: Great looking SA. I have been working on a 1947 SA for over a year and have it just about finished. I want to show it at a small show near home in June. I'll try to post pictures soon.

Great looking job Hugh. Those who would like to see you in the photo must have missed that shot of you in your shorts. How does it do with that disk in the background?

Paul: Quite agreed, no point in spoiling a nice tractor photo with me in it.

I have never tried that disk behind the SA, I doubt if it would do very well with only 9.5x24 tires. I have 12.4x24 on 130 and 140 and they can loose traction quite easily on that disk. It is 24 blade with 18" blades, really too heavy for offset Farmalls. I'd just as soon have 20 blades, and that disk may indeed become a 20 blade, if no one buys it.

I just bought a new woods mower for my A. Do you mow in 3rd gear or 2nd gear? I have found that I can mow in 3rd find and the mower seems to cut just as well as 2nd. What size tires do you have on the rear? I have 11.2s

Nice job, Hugh! Is that your garden? Does your new house / farm start growing on you, your wife and your tractors?
Regards, Hendrik

Hendirk: That is my garden area, what your seeing next to the tractor is buckwheat. It does seem to be growing on us, however this very sandy loam is taking a bit of getting used to. I've farmed sandy loam before, but not the ratio of sand we have here. I'm sure the neighbors are finding some of my sand booboo's entertaining.

Haas: Given the price of their decals, it's not top priority. It still has the serial tag on the back shield. I'm not certain I'm going to keep that mower. A guy not far from me has an excellent version of the 3 point hitch model 59 mower. He has to convince his wife to sell, apparently she gave it to him as a gift many years ago. I would like to use my tractor for other work, and for that reason I don't like the belly nower.

Hugh, I believe the simple solution here,,,,, ,,,is to buy and fix up another tractor. ;)
