Hi, I recently purchased a super A when I drained the oil I found water in the oil. I changed the head gasket and it runs fine. However as I became more famaliar with the Farmall and the sleeve engine I think the leak may be in the O-ring at the bottom of one of the cylinders. Is there any way to seal this leak without removing the sleeve and replacing the seal? Thanks Russ

I fixed mine the hard way of course. Later several old timers in St. Louis told me its very common to have coolant in oil in A tractors. They said change oil and forget about it unless you have more than a cupful.

I would try a can of radiator sealer first. Zecol heavy duty Mentite is a good one. I don't think there is any other way of sealing it other than replacing the O ring. Usually whenever I tore one down, there was so much loose rust and crud around the bottom of the deck that would seal a leaky o ring.

Sealers dont work well on an engine without a water pump

The Orings are fairly cheap to purchase but a lot of things to take off just to get to them. This engine is fairly cheap to overhaul. If I were going to tear it down far enough to replace Sleeve O-rings I would just go ahead and give it an InFrame overhaul while I was there and had it tore down that far.If you get it tore down and there is much of a ring groove at all I wouldn't hesitate overhauling it. Give me a call if you want to talk about some inexpensive options.

Had the same thing happen to me on a Farmall 230. I removed the sleeves and put in new O rings. No problems since.

You didnt say how much water you found and the history of the engine as to how has it been used and so forth. I will drop pan then let wait a few days to see if coolant is leaking beneath the sleeve. If the engine hasnt been run in a few days removing pan now probably would show where the sleeve is leaking if its the sleeve. I had one last winterdidnt leak there but head gasket did leak at the rear of the block and let coolant into the oil. Cleaned it up installed new gasket and has been used this winter with no leaks.

Russ: I think you may as well plan on pulling the sleeve. You might be able to doctor it up from the bottom. I don't know what you would use, nor would I have much confidence in that approach.

I might add some easy fixes have lasted a long time. I remember once having a crack in a 6.2 Chevy diesel oil pan. Just a slow drip. I was under the truck doing something else, decided to wipe it clean. Oil reappeared similar to blood from a cut, very slow. I resigned myself to buying a new oil pan. Decided to look around the shop to see what I might have for a temperary fix. Only thing I could see was gasket black. Back under the truck, and with a dab of gasket black on my finger, I wiped it clean again with other hand, following immediately with pressuring gasket black right into the crack. after the initial dab dried I allpied 3 more coats allowing each one to dry enough so it was firm. 10 years and 400,000 miles later the gasket black was still holding.

You might just smear enough gasket black on that seal to make it hold. I doubt if a Super A has as much vibration as a 6.2 diesel.

You can check those seals on the sleeves by removing the oil pan and look for water dripping
from that area. I think you would need to remove the pistons and replace all the seals. That area where the seals are needs to be thoroughly cleaned of any rust or dirt. You would need to use a ridge reamer to remove the ridge at the top of the sleeves so you don't damage the pistons during removal. Hal
