Noticed a slight radiator antifreeze leak last week. Thought I would investigate it when I changed the oil today. Wow. After I drained the oil and changed the filter, I looked at the dipstick before I added the new oil. Whitish glop on the dipstick. Yuck.

Is this a bad head gasket? Can a shade tree mechanic change one or is it a dealer job?

thanks for the help.

Thanks Yugrotcart and John M. The tractor was used to snowblow 8-10 times this winter (I live in Maine) and has always been stored in the garage which does not freeze but gets cold. Plenty of antifreeze so I know a cracked head is not an issue.

OF course, such is life, now its spring and EVERYTHING needs tractor work. So I guess I will mow and rototill and keep an eye on it like a hawk. Cai I do much damage if I run it for about 3-4 hours to buy some time before repair?

Thanks again.

Jerry

with a fresh oil change put the mower on it and run it hard the hotter the better. check it after two hours probably just condensation from the winter. mowing gets her nice and warm and burns all that moisture out. My cub did that every year. used the loader to move snow and it used oil and got the white goop on the dipstick. put the mower on it and it never used a drop of oil all summer, no goop just added 50/50 to the radiator to make up what boiled out. defintly pushed it to run it good and hot the first time mowing

May also just be condensation.
I'd change the oil, work it, and keep an eye on the antifreeze and oil levels.

Fairly simple job, you can do it. Was the coolant level low, or leaking outside the radiator?
