Farmall 340 wide front

I've bought a 200+ acre farm in Kentucky. about 50 acres is tillable ground but I'll only be planting about 10 acres of food plots for deer hunting. Local fellow will use his equipment for making hay off the remainder. Rest of the property is wooded.

Have been looking for a tractor and prefer the older ones.

I'm looking at Farmall 340 with the wide front end and have a couple questions...

Was the wide front a factory thing on these?? Kinda looks like it sits nose up with the wide front end, different from the IH 340 utility.

Also, are any aftermarket loaders available for these or how hard is it to find an original loader?

Owner is asking $3200 for it, it seems in nice original condition. Doesn't smoke, runs nice, is gas, says it's a 1961 model. Lift works nice & smooth ect.

I just want a dependable tractor to use when I'm at the farm to bush hog - maintain the driveway - and plow some plots here & there. Is this a good choice?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Dave

Dave, I don`t think there`s such a thing as a dumb question,I figured thats what this forum is for,to help each other out ! The easiest way I can think of to tell if it has power steering or not would be, if with the tractor not moving ,turn the steering wheel a few rotations each direction. Do it first with tractor running and then do it with tractor off. If it has power steering, there should be a noticeable difference in ease of turning. You can also take a peek up under the dash and look if you can see 2 hydraulic tubes running up to a hydraulic motor right behind the steering wheel.Kinda tight up under there to see much, but if it has the motor it has power steering. As far as adding extra remotes is concerned, I`m not much of a hydraulic expert, but I found a 340 at a salvage yard that had 2 remotes and I added them to my tractor. Not a real big project, but you have to remove the dash to mount the Hydra Touch levers and such. That is the IH factory setup, though. You should be able to just plumb in a valve that would operate a loader, but like I said ,I`m no expert and others will have a better idea on that .
P.S. It sounds like the tractor at least has a 2pt. or 3pt. fast hitch on it if the guy says it has a "hydraulic lift". Mark

Dave, I also have a 340 with a wide front and I think it`s a great tractor. To try and answer a few of your questions and comments, yes those are the factory weights on the front end. The weights on each side fit the 240, 340 or 404 and the slab weight across the front will fit those 3 models plus the 460 and 560. You can add weights across the front by using longer bolts and stacking more slab weights. The tractor you`re looking at looks very well kept up. I think it or at least portions of it were repainted at some time just by looking at the front rims and the headlights.Originally, they never had silver on the front rims and the lights should be red as well. Do you know if the 340 has power steering ? The wide fronts steer somewhat harder than the narrow and then if you hang a loader on ,it`s going to be a handful W/O power steering in my opinion. I suppose it depends how much you`ll be using it, though. One other thing I noticed- does it have any hydraulic remotes? I don`t see any hydraulic levers on the right side of the dash where they`d normally be. Just something for you to be aware of. Good luck, Mark

OK - Here's the deal according to the owner.
Doesn't know if it has power steering or not, but it "steers real easy" :). How could I tell if steering is power?

I asked if it had any hydraulic fittings on it and he said "It's got a hydraulic lift", so I'm assuming there aren't any xtra hydraulic hookups. Would it be easy, hard, or impossible to retrofit rear or mid hydraulics? If I want to eventually add a loader should I pass on this one if is has no hookups?

I think the seller is even less of a tractor guy than I am. He says he's owned it for about 12 years and it's always run like a top. He has 11 acres he bushhogs with it. Other than that he doesn't know to much about it other than tires are nearly new as he had them put on and he's changed the oil once a year (because of minimal use).

I'm sorry if I'm asking dumb questions, I sure appreciate y'all's knowledge, suggestions and observations.

Regards, Dave

Thanks for all your replies folks.

PUTTER - Where'd you get your loader, how hard was it to find and what brand is it? I sure wish you'd install it and let me know how the install went and how it works for ya :).

Here's the only pic I have - from seller's description and this pic, it just looks to me like a nice well maintained original tractor. Has front weights (are they factory?) and a 5' bush hog.

The more I hear about this tractor the more I like it. It's about a 120 mile one-way trip for me to go look at it though and I'd hate to drive that far and find out pic was deceiving. Maybe I'll ask the seller to shoot me a few more pics.

Dave, Looks like a nice tractor. I don't see any remotes either but plumbing shouldn't be to big a deal. I bought that 2001 loader for mine last year here in the up of michigan, paid 1000 bucks for it, it is what they would have come new with. I looked for it for a long time. It came off a 460 so has a longer frame which I will have to cut and weld back together to install. My tractor has 2 remote outlets on each side up by the lights that I assume would be for the loader. I've recently bought a Farmall H, I'm thinking of putting the loader on that cause I wouldn't need it that often. That would free my 340 up for more use I think. If you decide to make the trip to possibly buy that one I would take a trailer with. I haul mine on 7000 gvw flat deck trailer with electric brakes. I had to loosen the wheels up and move them in to get it in between the fenders on the trailer. Hope this helps PUTTER

Dave, I have a 340 Farmall with the wide front and 36 rear tires and its sit high in the front. I beleive this tractor could be had with 36 or 38 rears so I think thats the difference. I use mine to do the same thing you intend to do. I have a 2 bottom trailing plow that it pulls nicely, a 10ft disc that will sometimes bring it to its knees but I just pick it up with the tires and it works okay. I bought a 5ft king kutter brush hog for it and now wish I would have gotten a 6ft. Mine has the 2 point hitch I use an adapter with. I bought a 2001 loader for it last year but don't have it on the tractor yet. I think they're a great tractor for the small acreage guy. I paid 2500 for mine in 1995 so I think the price is about right. Make sure it has all the tin work because that stuff is hard to find. Hope this helps. PUTTER

GADave, 1961 340's would start w/serial #6642. The price sounds very reasonable if everything works; sheet metal good/complete; TA, if equipped, works. Some came w/power steering; two or three point; one to three Hydra-Touch controls, or maybe none. My Farmall 340 gas has factory utility wide front, no power steering, two-point, original six volt, straight/complete sheet metal painted a slightly darker red than original and the white isn't cream color, but a great paint job so I'm not messing w/it. Original loader was IH 2001, I have one - trip bucket - although a front cylinder was optional and they can be hard to find. I picked my loader up in Kentucky, when gas was cheaper last summer. Live pto is a nice feature of these ~ 35 hp, 5000 pound tractors. My opinion, you better jump on it, as you could always find an interested buyer. Good luck!

They sit nose high. Look on left side of page and click on tractor photos, then put in farmall 340. Picture from Charles Curry and some others showes the original type wide front with tie rods out front of axle.

I have a Farmall 340D and it sits high in the nose as well. Friend has a 340 gasser and decided to put 38" rears mounted on 350 hubs and his sits level. I engineered a Schwartz WFE designed for a 504 and mounted it under mine and it still sits high in the nose but Like the WFE.
I have an Allied Front end loader on mine as well and works like a charm.

The 340, like many IH tractors could be had with interchangeable WF, NF, and SF. What you see could be aftermarket, a picture would help. The rear tires could be 4 ply, the front 6 ply, etc, or the fronts could be oversized, the rears under, etc. It may not have been absolutely level from the factory, but should be close. As described the tractor should be ok as long as it is used within its limits.
