Last week my H started missing on #1 an #2 cylinders. I have adjusted the valves and regapped the points, cleaned the sediment bowl and cleaned and regapped the spark plugs. A compression check shows 85 lbs on all cylinders except for #2 and it is 90 lbs. Can fouling two plugs come from running too rich and if so why just #1 and #2?

First check if you have a decent spark from the coil. (strong, bright blue and at jumps at least 1/4" gap) A friend ran for a year with problems like yours before calling for help. Turned out the coil was so weak that it couldn't produce a decent spark.
Check the simple things first!

Fouling could have a simpler answer than might first come to mind. It may not be plugs, or the electrical system at all.

Have you checked the valve guides in the head?

I have a '40 H that I could not keep from fouling the number 2 cylinder plug: tried plugs, cables, points, and it still fouled. Sounded like a John Deere when it ran. Compression was never a problem, and I was ready to use her as a 'moble parts supply' for another tractor.

On the advice of one older and wiser than I (my father), I replaced the head with one from a different engine, and low and behold, it runs as smooth as a sewing machine, with nice clean plugs.

Turns out the valve guides were worn on the old head, and were letting oil leak in to the cylinder, resulting in fouled plugs. I'm not saying thats you're problem, but it sounds suspiciously close to it.

.....and before anyone jumps me with, "the compression test would show that", remember that the valves are CLOSED when the piston is on the upstroke, so unless the valve doesn't seal, you'll show good compression.

Its on the DOWN stroke, when the intake valves are open, that it may be literally sucking oil through the valve guides into the cylinder, resulting in a fouling problem that won't go away.

Pull the valve cover, remove the rocker arm assembly, and see if you have play in the intake valves: mine were bad enough that you could see the play in the guide.

New wires ain't always good wires. Check with ohmmeter. Copper should be so close to zero. Carbon couple thousand ohms per foot, usually. Years ago I had a set from Sears and sawbuck, every one was open, copper wires. Crimping job on ends was bad. Same with some boat motors.

i am having the same problem with one of my m's. fouled 2+3, had 386 autolites, switched to 3116's, 1 and 2 fouled. cleaned em switched em , and they fouled in the other cylinders. i picked up a set of 388 autolites, so far all is running ok. looks like both boxes had 2 bad plugs in each box. never had that happen before.

Have you taken a real close look at the cap for any hairline cracks or build up on the polls .How much slop in the shaft what does the end of the rotor look like.

It's a new cap and rotor but tried yesterday with the old ones and same thing. I was thinking blown head gasket until I checked the compression so I thought I'd ask here. The old plugs #1 & #2 I swapped with new plugs and she runs fine. As far as the shaft I haven't went that far yet. Thanks again

Try starting it at night, then turn off the lights and see if it's arcing anywhere. Could be the wires breaking down.

Thanks Tom but all are new wires just replaced last year. That was my first thought too.

Yes it can, simple test, put the missing plugs in three and 4 start it and run it if the miss follows the plugs, put some autolites or AC plugs in it, and see if there is a cure. JimN
