Opinions on IHC 806 - hydrauluics?

I've seen some mention that the 806 hydraulics were weak. Is this the case, and is there anything that can be done about it?

I'm looking at picking up one at a good price and using it for haying with a haybine and a round baler.

I have seen that some folks consider them to be one of the best tractors ever made.

Opinions?

I've got an 856 which has the same hydraulic system maybe higher relief valve pressure I don't know. It has 12000 hours on it and it will easily pick up a ton round bale on the loader that has smaller cylinders on it meant for a 4020 john deere that has higher operating hydraulic pressure. Lee

There is noting wrong with the hyd's on a 806 if the pumps are in good shape . If she is stock then they should flow 12 gph at rated pto speed and 1750 lbs pressure , yes you can install a 17 gph pump and yes you can install a 2350 relief . There are three pumps in a 806 one for the pto one for the main hitch a remotes and one for the MCV that controls steering T/A brakes and lube to the oil cooler and to the rearend . There is nothing on a 806 that can not be fixed with money time and love.

Hello,
A 806 is a great tractor. there are two pumps one for the steering and brakes and one for the hitch and remotes. they are an aluminum body pump so they do wear out. if you are looking to buy one just check it out before buying it. a realy good hyd system will turn the front wheel from stop to stop with out moving at an idle. and draw the engine down when you pull the remote lever. if there is a problem the pumps are not that costly. there could be some other hyd problem but most times changing the pump will fix weak hyd.
overall I would not be afraid of a 806. some things to look at is the front end, TA , engine blow by and cold starting and the shift lincage.
Good Luck Ed

Ours had 25,000+ hours on it when we traded it in, I don't remember Dad ever saying anything about work being done on the hydraulics.

Remember, they don't have big time GPM or pressure like a new tractor does (I think around 15 GPM at 2000 psi or so). Just remember to change the filters once in a while and keep the oil in good condition.

For a haybine and baler it would work great. Ours was used on the baler and chisel plow mostly.

A Farmall is a Farmall is a Farmall. The 806 is a Farmall that is about 60 years old.

All old tractors need attention from time to time.

Well, its about 42-43 years old.

What I'm asking is whether this model had chronic problems with the hydraulics. And, was it considered to be a good solid design.

Yes, all tractors need care, but some models have inherently bad aspects to their design.

No,

Wasn't trying to be a smart azz, but it sure came off that way, didn't it? :>)

The point I was trying to make was that all of those old Farmalls are more or less the same and IH never built a cronic "bad one" that I know of.

The answer to your hydraulics question is no. I have never driven one, but the only complaint I have heard is that the shifting mechanism gets out of line making it hard to shift.
