Thinking about another tractor. One big use would be for transplanting vegetables. Right now we use the 806 (13.6-38 tires)- for some crops we go in low gear, low idle. so we need a tractor that would go at least that slow. how would a 656 compare? what do you all use for transplanting vegetables? we don't need much power, but most low hp tractors i've found have few gears and fast. thanks

If you don't need all the modern conveniences like live PTO, hydraulics, etc. and your power requirements are low - an F-series Farmall that was originally on steel will have slow speed gears...

My 544 owners manual lists a special low first gear that is lower than the standard first gear. I'm sure it was available on the 656 too. Finding a tractor with the option may not be easy. There may be a code letter for it on the serial number, anyone know?

Oops, made a mistake. Checked my 544 manual. The special gearing is a HIGH speed first gear.

You could get a Hydro tractor for your slow speed needs. Hydro was available with the 544, 656, 1026, 1066, Hydro 70, Hydro 86, and Hydro 186.

I don't know the mph specs for a gear drive 656, but I believe an 806 in low range 1st gear would be slower.

Yea, we've been thinking about a hydro- may be the best option yet. tend to be expensive to buy, expensive to repair, and inefficient. however, running an 806 or bigger is way more ponies than we need, so i'm sure that's inefficient too. i figured since a 656, 666, 686 have only a 5 speed, 1st is likely to be faster than on the bigger ones with the 8 speed.

if we go with a hydro, i would think we'd want the 544, 656, 70, or 86- are these all comparable or are there significant improvements?

They are all pretty much the same tractor with different engines.

If ya hurry, you can pick up this tall version with the 312 diesel.
