Farmall 100 Woods Belly Mower Help!

I have a Farmall 100 with a Woods belly mower. I would like to use the mower for my yard, but the deck swings up and down because it is pivoting on the lift chains. This is how the mower was set up when I got the tractor two years ago so I'm not sure if this is right - and if there is something I can do so the deck is steady while I mow.

Thanks for the help and advice!

HI I have a super A and woods mower. Mine has the skids on the side no wheels. Chains should go in front set of chain holes. I set mine to have a little slack in chain when clear down. then I pick up a little to mow. I bought the book for my mower and it says use the front holes. I took the chain through the holes and looped up to chain again and bolted it together. stays tight that way

Rob: It's a whole new ball game with gauge wheels, the chain never needs to be tight, in fact if ground is smooth and you have no obsticles you could throw the lift chain away.

Tom: Is there a cross member between your push arms that also attaches to back of deck? Do you have gauge wheels at front of deck? How are your lift chains currently set up? Knowing that is important in finding the answer.

I posted a picture of the setup. Hopefully it is attached to this...
Thanks for all of the help!

Tom: Usually a photo is worth a 1,000 words, however in this case not so. I see the cross member between the mower push rails behind the deck, however I can't tell if that cross member is attached to the deck with one bolt at the middle of the cross member.

The chain looks right, in fact is identical to my own. The gauge wheels look right.

It looks to me as though those big tires are the problem, and to compensate for those someone has removed the bolt attaching the cross member to the deck at the mid point. That being the case, I can't understant how you lift the mower without rolling the belt in the pulley system. Could you confirm if that cross member is attached to deck at the middle? That mower is supposed to pivot from the back end of those push rails. If someone has made those rigid, making the deck pivot where it attaches to push rails it will not work right. If that is the case, I'm surprised you can mow at all.

Tom: You still haven't answered my question,"IS THAT CROSS MEMBER ATTACHED TO BACK OF MOWER DECK AT MID POINT ON CROSS MEMBER?" It looks like it may be in photos 2 and 3, however in the original photo, I'm not so sure. If the cross member is attached, how is it attached.

Quite frankly your mower looks like it should work. As far as the chain lift goes, it doesn't matter much how you have it on when using gauge wheels. My chain is loose all the time I'm mowing, about the only time I ever lift it is to cross a rut or threshold of my shop door. If it weren't for the door and some road ruts I have to cross, I could throw the chain lift away. It is nice to be able to pick it up when removing blades for sharpening though.

First notice on your deck (if it is a L59) you have 4 places on the front of it for chains. On the first set of tabs I would loop a chain from one side to the other and add a spring from about mid-ways of the chain to one of the bolts on the "torque tube" or whatver you call it. The chain from your rockshaft arm should be just long enough to reach the second set of loops. I would try to make the second chain do a y if I could, by adding a link. So basically when you are done you will have a chainfromt he rockshaft arm straight to the second set of loops. That should make you deck fairly stabile.

My Woods mower has guage wheels on it. You let the mower down so that it is riding on those wheels, and then it follows the contour of the ground.
