On my 484 the fuel shut off lever is marked 1/2 way with start and all the way up it says run. I also seen a 574 thats the same. Are you supposed to have the fuel shutoff lever 1/2 way up to start it?

If you are what does this do to make it start?

Hi Michael, the Start position is only used for first start of the day. It acts like a choke on gas engine. If you live in warm temperatures you may not have to use it. After engine starts on START position let it run for about 10 sec then pull lever up to RUN position. Look on the side of the fuel injection pump, the fuel control lever contacts a plunger as it is activated by the STOP/START/RUN lever, the STOP position is when the plunger is fully compressed and START is with the plunger fully extended and the fuel control lever still touching the plunger, RUN is with the fuel control lever fully forward touching the stop adjustment screw.
