hi there trying to degree my camshaft in and cant get where it needs to be. Spec card says 108 degrees I kept getting 111 until i pulled the cam gear(after i put re-locater marks on the gears)and the key out out of the shaft to try to advance/retard the cam to get it back down to 108. Do I need to get a 3degree offset key to accomidate the advance. I have fooling around with the thing for about a week and keep scratchin my head!!!

Any possibility to get a compression reading? Kinda like a "before and after" to see if this has any effect of cyl pressure. Years back, we offset a key for dad"s 50 H that we pulled, was just a H cam. Never got to try it both ways,,, but one way, it took the low end torque out of it,, smoothed it out more the less,,,, at stock, it was aggressvie almost too much power,, so thats the reason why we chose for less,, but never tried to go the other direction,, yet. Was like a .015-.018 offset key. ChadS

Milling another keyway in the gear on the opposite side, and indexing the cut to be where you want it is also possible. Marking the new timing teeth will be important! JimN

Anyone with a milling machine can make an offset key. You may have to make more than one to get what you are after.

If you want the engine to ever run you need to do as Edpap suggested. Then your valve & ignition timing will be in time with No1 piston. Hal

Hello Daniel,
I am not sure what you trying to do ? if you are tring to put this engine together stock then you need to press the cam gear on with the key in place. if you have the gear on the cam without the key and you can turn it then you need to use loctite or replace the cam and or gear. it should press on tight. there should be two marks on cam gear and one mark 180 degrees from it. I am not sure why you made new marks but forget them and use the factory marks. the two marks on the cam gear line up with the one mark on the crank shaft and the one mark on the cam lines up with the two marks on the mag drive gear.

Sorry for the confusion it is a H that I am setting up for pulling. It has been bored to fit 350 pistons, running a 350 head and manifold to build more power. had the cam reground and the spec card says it needs to be intake centerlined at 108degrees. I have to have near that figure or power band will be thrown off a little. So i tried the stock cam gear location with the woodruff key and dial indicatior on the #1intake lifter with a pushrod. Trying to degree the cam. I attached the dial indicator to the top of the pushrod to take the readings of the cam lobe. Well I ended up getting a reading of 111(intake centerline) so that would be three degrees advanced right?? If so i need to get that figure down to 108 IC so I would need an offset key. The question is A:) Who makes them? B:) How much offset do I really need? C:) Do I need to do it on the crank gear or the cam gear??

Hi Dan,
OK now I feel better that i know what you are tring to do. My machine shop could answer this question better than me. if you had the cam reground then they should of done it to the stock marks. if they are giving you that spec then I would say you need an off set key.
I had my machine shop make one for me that i put in a SM. with a stock cam I was not happy with the way it ran. we never got a good track last year to see what it could do. it dyno not much more HP.
