I was wondering what peoples opinions were on the D188s. Ihave a 504 with a D188 and have had some problems. The first problem was a broke crank about a year and half ago. Rebuilt the engine about 75 hrs later the engine balancer came apart on me. Parts are kind of hard to find and expensive. Is it worth another rebuild or are these problem engines. Thanks for any input

I have a 1962 F504D. From what I can gather, mine threw a rod in the late 60's and knocked two holes in the block. The holes were welded and the engine rebuilt. My grandfather bought it in '71 and now I have it. It has about 13K-15K on it and still runs strong. I am in the process of a restore and the engine is one of the few things I feel are well enough to not touch right now. It is a good, dependable engine, just lacking the 6-cylinder power.

Tim: Probably one of the best diesel engines IH ever built. It is exactly 2/3 of the famous 282 used in 560, 660, 656 and 706. The problem at 75 hours lies right in the lap of the rebuilder. Properly rebuilt those engines are good for 10,000 between rebuilds, and some of them have been rebuilt twice, might even be a few in the 30,000 hour range, and rebuilt the 3rd time.
