Does anyone know what type nuts are used on the valve cover studs. It looks like they would need to be tapered in order to match the sheet metal and keep oil from seeping out around the studs that hold the cover down. Either that, or they had a fiber washer underneath the nut that provided sealing. Mine obviously has the wrong nuts on it. It's a 1974 key start 140. Thanks to the group.

That's right, it was a brass compression washer! Not a brass nut. Looked alot like a grommet.

I believe the nut is a standard fine thread 3/8 inch. That would be 3/8-24 NF. There is a special brass or copper washer that is supposed to go under the nut. The washer is IH part number 62866D or 357374 R1. As Hugh said, don't over tighten, or you may deform the valve cover.

Just took a look at my 1966 140--definitely stock in that area; I've owned it since new. As Hugh said, just a regular hex hut over split washer. Cover does not look "taper-friendly" around the stud. Maybe something has been done to your cover? Or maybe it is aftermarket?

I remember that they seemed to be brass, and yes there is a special washer for them. My mind is drawing a blank, but I seem to recall that they were some type of high heat plastic. But it seems to me that a fiber, cork or other washer would seal them up just fine.

rdragoo: I saw your question this morning, been 4 years since I had the valve cover off my 140. I don't remember anything special about those bolts, however I intended to look today and forgot. I know my SA and 130 have bolts in the head with a threaded top and 2 nuts hold the valve cover down. I believe my 140 is the same. I do know if you draw those down too tight you will recess top of cover around bolts. If that has happened they will leak.
