I have a 1940 H. It starts up and idles just fine but when I throttle up it starts to sputter and stalls. I have replaced the plugs, the pug wires, points, condensor, anybody else ever have this problem?

1. Open the high speed FUEL mixture screw so you can run at max RPM's, let the engine warm up, & re-adjust the high speed screw for max speed & smoothness. Add 1/2-3/4 turn out for extra power.
2. Idle the engine & adjust the idle AIR screw for smoothest running & turn the screw IN 1/4 turn extra for a bit of richness to reduce acceleration stumble & the need for choke.
3. Re-set the idle speed to 500 RPM or so.
4. Now repeat the entire process to verify all screw settings. Service manual & carb kit instruction settings will just get you "in the ballpark" so you can make the final adjustments.
If any screw adjustments cannot be performed, the carb needs cleaning.

My 40 H will sputter and try to stall after it cranks for 1 to 2 minutes in warm weather and up to 5 minutes in cold weather. I have found the best way to go is little less than 1/2 throttle, then when it cranks choke it quick pull and release on choke right about the time it is about to die. Some times I may have to do the choke thing 2 or 3 times in cold weather, 1 time in warm weather. I never touch the trottle until she levels out, or she will cough, spit and pop. Then she puuuurs like a kitten after that.

If Rusty's point does not work, the fuel delivery is likely at fault. Richen the load screw 1/4 turn at a time to make it better. If this does not work, put time and effort into fuel lines and strainers (sediment bowl, pipe into tank above that, strainer in fitting at the carb. JimN

They will all do that when the engine is cold. Let the engine just idle for a few minutes until it is warmed up a bit, and then try giving it some throttle.
