My neighbor has a mid 60's Int. B-275 diesel. We have it running but it has blown out 3 glow plugs. The first 2 times the plugs were old and he had been using ether to start. I've replaced the glow plugs w/ new,(but have yet to wire them up) we pulled it to start,(no ether)got it to the barn and another plug blew out. The glow plugs appear to be melting the insulating core and blowing out the element. Different cylinders each time. They seem to be getting too hot! Motor temp is low, no ether, and the glow plugs are'nt even wired. Whats going on? Any suggestions? I've never seen that before. Thanks for any help!

Sorry guys if my post was misleading. All 4 glow plugs are new. They are not wired yet, and we pulled to start w/ no ether. After about 20 min. the #4 plug heated up & blew out. The #3 plug shows signs of heating. These plugs have had no ether or even been hotted up to the switch. Hence my dilema. Where is all that heat and high compression coming from w/ nothing but fuel. Again no ether on these new plugs and they have never been hooked up. PS they are the correct champion plugs.

I must ask do you mean the filiment burns out and they become "open" electrically, or do you mean self distruct mechanically. JimN

As you probably were aware, I don't think you're supposed to use ether with glow plugs.

All four plugs were damaged from the (repeated?) ether use.
Unless plugs you've changed AFTER ether was used are now failing, you have one more plug to change for sure.

I am also thinking that you have to hold the lever down to activate the glow plugs...so if they get so hot as to melt their casing maybe these folks should let go of the lever sooner.! I have a B250...hold the glow plugs on for 40 to 60 seconds and it will start right up..some tractors only need a few seconds of glow plug. If this tractor doesn't start well it may need injectors cleaned or an injector cleaner/conditioner in the fuel

From the original post, it sounds like the glow plugs aren't/weren't even wired up... Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but it sounds like the tractor was being started on ether alone.

I've always understood that using ether on a glowplug engine was particularly bad. Ether creates extremely high cylinder pressures, even for a diesel, and the glow plugs are a weak point.
