Gents - last week I came a-whining about my M, starter turned but crank did not. You offered good advice, diagnosis - and made me a bit ill. Here's the follow-up: tore it down, removed engine, all flywheel to crank bolts broken off! What a relief!! I'll take it to town and let the machine shop guys do their magic. Any advice on lining up the shaft/splines when installing?
Thanks for your help - seriously.

Jim(?),
If I understand correctly the sequence for installing the engine is:
1. Open clutch access from below, including remove belly pump and clutch shaft.
2. Mount engine to clutch housing, with clutch/flywheel attached and PP springs compressed.
3. Return clutch shaft, etc., and release PP springs.
4. Remount belly pump.
That about it?

As the engine is close to fully up against the belhousing (maybe 1/2" gap) the shaft is easiest to install. (Much easier) Then seat the engine, and put in the drive bolts. JimN

Repeated from page 4..JimN
New pilot bearing, or accurate measurement of the existing bearing to assure it is OK.
New plate, new TO bearing.
Resurface flywheel friction surface, and take the same amount off of the rim where the clutch PP mounts to the FW. this keeps the geometry correct.
Take out three of the PP mounting bolts equaly around (120 degrees apart)use the three to screw into the rear of the PP where there are three holes of correct thread. These bolts release the PP clamping force from the FW. this allows the pp to be released while putting the engine in. after assembly the bolts are re installed in the FW, after putting in the shaft. Re: New Clutch Disc for Super M in reply to Janicholson, 05-03-2008 16:30:18 Now when ya reface the flywheel there is a specific hight that the step needs to be cut to . as a lot of places do not know this and this is why alot of clutches slip. the correct step hight should be 1.406 . write that sown so ya don't forgot .
