IH 624 ignition problem

Hello. I'm hoping someone can help me diagnose a problem I'm having with my IH 624 Diesel tractor (German type with Bosch parts). I think I'm on the right track, but I have very little experience with older tractors.

The tractor usually starts quite easily when it's warm, but a few days ago while trying to start it, it would just crank over without starting. I tried to get it started three times in fairly quick succession (never letting it crank over to many times at once), and on the third attempt there was a fairly load 'pop' noise from behind the 'dash' area, and a puff of smoke exited a hole out the left side of the tractor.

I opened up the dash area, and was surprised to see a whole mess of wiring (the tractor is pretty old, and none of the original lights are operational but it looks like all the original wiring is still in place). I was hoping to find some indication of an electrical arch but couldn't see anything on initial glance. That's not surprising, as the whole area is in desperate need of a good cleaning. The tractor body in that 'dash' area has large bore holes in the body of the tractor (original holes), and so it's pretty grungy in there with a lot of residue on all the electrical connections.

I'm leaning toward an ignition switch problem. The front lights (not original; added by the previous owner who just bought it to tune her up and resell it) used to work by simply turning the key a couple of places clockwise, but since the 'pop' and smoke, the lights no longer turn on when the key is turned. The only thing that bugs me about it being the ignition is that the key and ignition switch is on the right side of the tractor, and I would have thought I'd see the smoke come from the hole on that side of the tractor and not the left.

Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track? I'd rather limit the number of trips to the wreckers pulling parts!

If it still cranks, it should start (unless that model has a fuel shut off solenoid). In which case the wiring will need to be traced and checked with a meter to assess the burnt out component. Letting smoke out of electrical components is usually permanent on the functionality of that part. JimN

Thanks for the reposnse Jim.

Maybe I wasn't clear in my post, but ever since the 'pop' and smoke, the tractor's been completely dead. It won't even crank over. nothing happens at all (no lights after turnign the key to the appropriate place, no turning over when the starting knob is pulled out, etc.).

I've bought a multi-meter and was going to chech for voltage in the wiring to try and see where (if) I have power.

The power goes from the starter relay (battery cable terminal of it)To the dash. This may have a fuse link in it that breaks when overloaded. I would clean it up, find that wire (10gauge) and trace voltage from there. Jimn
