While I'm putting the Super M rear and tranny back together, would it be better to try and re-shim the ring and pinion for backlash and pattern, or would it be better to put the shims back as they came out? To recap, I'm putting new bearings throughout the transmission and rear.

Unfortunately I neglected to at least check the backlash before I went crazy and took everything apart. I don't think it was out of hand before, but I'd bet there's enough wear to at least make the backlash out of spec. But I also know they've worn in a pattern over the last couple of decades and maybe it's better to put them back as they are. Would a little extra backlash hurt if the pattern was fine? I need some help with this one!

I read Randy-IA's post below and see that he may be having issues after trying to re-set the ones on his. It making me stop and think about this one.

that is correct, you dont need preload on ball brgs. for some reason i was thinking of tapered roller brgs.

That might be a good place to start . I just went into it like they were new gears for a race car . I know tight gears howl . That's why I'm confused with mine being set at .012 . That's the max for the backlash according to the IT book . Minimum is .008 . John M's reply makes a lot of sense to me about mine . Since the noise doesn't seem to be coming from the rear end but from the tranny area . I just have the gears meshing tighter on the main shaft and counter shaft . Since it's 61 years old and obviously wasn't taken care of well it's running with a different contact area now . Time will tell . I think I'm going to use it as is after I get a new rim till this fall . Good Luck ! ...Randy

BTW- don't glue anything together till it's right .

You want your pattern in the middle of your tooth. You dont want it too close to the ends or the edge. Then you want about,I think,9 thousandths backlash.Hopefully somebody thats done this a lot will answer.I never did it on a farm tractor, just big trucks. You need a dial indicator and I cant remember what you set backlash at since its been a lot of years since I did it.I think it was 7-10 thousandths. If you use used parts you can have a little more backlash. In my opinion you should reshim the ring and pinion.Others might say different, but I think with having it apart to put in bearings you might as well set it right too.It might work out that it sets right if you put the same shims back in,and it wouldnt hurt to try it like that, but if its not right I would try and get it as close as I could.

I'll probably do that, try it with the shims as they are and check the pattern. Then go from there.

your right you should have got the backlash setting and a pattern, because it has to be set the same as it was.probably best to go the way it was with original shims.if you have too much lash you will hear a clunk from for. to rev. but were talking excesive. a .002 greater shouldnt matter. better that than the howl.if the pattern is good go with it.one more reminder ,new brgs. need a preload.

Explain what you mean about preloading the bearings.
The bearing people tell me that preloading ball bearings will cause them to fail.

Ball bearings in all my years have NEVER had a pre-load . They are designed to ride in the center of their race not to one side . That's why tapered bearings were invented - for pre-loading . ...Randy
