I have a Gravely 8163B garden tractor with a 40" 3 blade mid mount mower. Friends tell me that the blades need to be "timed". That is, they should be in a certain position relative to each other. My manual doesn"t say anything about this and since they are run with a V belt it seems they would move eventually due to slippage. Any opinions on this? Do your mower manuals say anything about this? Thanks, Dave

Thanks guys. Spindles are off set so not worried about the blades hitting. I was thinking about how the cut grass gets thrown from the left side of the mower to the right side and then out of the chute. Dave.

You cannot time anything that is driven by a common v-belt... only if they are driven using a synchronous (cogged) belt can they be timed.

Every 3-blade mower I've encountered has the spindles off-set so that the blades cannot touch.

I have a Woods 3 blade belly mower under a Farmall H. It also is belt driven. There is NO way to time those blades.

best way to check is get under the deck (engine off of course) rotate the blades and see if you can make them touch when they come together. more than likely, the center blade sits forward of the outer two so they cannot hit each other. if it had a notched drive belt, those generally are timed.
