New H, will a 10SI alternator fit?

Hey guys,

This is my first post here. Today I became the proud new owner of a 1951 H. It appears as though it's been partially converted to 12V, so for my budget's sake, I'm going to put an alternator on it and finish wiring it up.

My question is this: will a 10SI alternator fit under the hood without having to cut the sheet metal? Also, what length of a Napa V-belt will I need?

Hopefully if a 10SI won't fit right, you all can recommend another delco 3 wire model that will, since I have access to Delco parts pretty cheaply!!

Thanks a lot for the help, I see this new project quickly becoming an addictive one!

Oh wow, those pictures are all just what I needed!

Thanks a ton guys! I just realized that where I work there's an abandoned old GMC S15 sitting out back rusting away... Might be a perfect source for a donor alternator. :)

Here's one way to mount an alternator - not my tractor so I can't provide anything more than the pictures...

A 10 SI is a very tight fit on an H. Most likely will rub on hood. I put a hitachi from a late 70's Nissan on my Super H. Fits perfect.

Hmm, I'll have to do some investigating. Early 90's/late 80's S-10s still had three different alt's on them depending on if they had a 2.5, 2.8, or 4.3 liter engine.

Even so, though, I'm sure one of them will work if you say so. I just need to get my hands on one and stuff it in there. Does anyone have a picture of their mounted delco or hitachi alternator? I wouldn't really mind using a Hitachi as long as I know what part number to order from NAPA and it still works fine.

Thanks a ton folks!

On the left under Parts and Pieces is a picture of alternator installation without cutting hood. Titled Farmall H - alternator.
Sorry that once again I have lost the name of the gentlemen who originally put this photo on the discussion page.

Any idea what year? Like late 90's?

Thanks for all the tips gang! Hopefully I can get all the wiring done early this week, then it'll be on to starting to get the rear rims replaced and then, who knows?!?

Thanks again!

Late 80's early 90's,square style.Any GM will work provided the alt is on the right side of the engine.

When you get the alt in place, just run a piece of 1/2 inch rope around and measure it.

Go and get yourself a Delco alternator off a late model S-10 Chevy. That is what I used on my H,fits perfect without having to cut the hood, and it puts out as much as a 10si.

The Delco-Remy alt you get now might be made in Japan, but Delco-Remy has a much better ring to it than Hitachi.I think its tasteless to put a Japanese alt on a classic American farm tractor, and this is coming from a Canadian.

Yes, but the size is very tight. Turn upside down the original bracket, and use a longer bolt to align rear. the belt must be just right. See breaking in rings 3 or 4 pages back for a pick of a Hitachi, alt from a Nissan PU 1985 or so. They are substantially smaller. JimN

Sometimes you gotta make em fit. Cut and try. Part of the fun. I would tell you if I knew. Never did that tractor.
