I am supposed to look at a Super M-TA tomorrow. It is on propane. Does anyone know the X-code for factory propane? I have looked in Guy Fay's book on Letter Series Farmalls, but didn't find a listing for propane. It makes a difference in value to me if it is factory rather than after market.

My 53 super M has the NJ suffix for factory propane some also had CJ, this according to Guy Fay in the letter series. I know the NJ works for a Super M, not sure for a SMTA.

I have looked at one like John A. and D. Slater are describing and it had the suffix like he was talking about.

cbtex, Go! Look! Take Pics, Make notes!!! For sure of the tank valve assembly as it relates to the rest of the tractor, Way too many varables to accurately say, Call Me and I will talk you through all Info I have!! and It is quit a lot.
The quinessential Super M-TA,LP has the Tank from a tank Co from Lubbock Tx, The Tank is a long-wise tank with Mono-valve assembly @ the 11:00 position at the rear of the tank, looking at the tank as if you were in the seat! Though there are other tank varities out there too. IH only officially sancationed 500 to be made! As I said I have waaaaayyyy tooo much info to type here! My cell # is 512-577-3837 Hollar at me and we can visit about it all. Later, John A.

I own a SMTA that had an aftermarket LP kit. The aftermarket LP tanks are different than the factory LP's. The aftermarket tanks set longways on the tractor while the factory LP's set crossway. Also, my serial tag gave no indication of it being a LP tractor. It has a 8574 DC head which as I understand would be suitable for LP and gas engines.

The real benefit of buying a LP tractor is that the engines are usually in good shape because LP is such a clean burning fuel.

I switched mine over to gas. Of course the LP hood was trash so you'll need to find a good SMTA hood if you switch to gas. . Good luck. Marv

Good luck on finding a clear answer to your question. A very very few owners of smtalp report having a C or N code stamped on serial tag and engine block. Most I have looked at from the place in Texas that installed the LP system have a D or E code or no code. D and E code is for high altitude pistons which would raise the compression to work better on LP. To further confuse things no IH SM parts book showes any of the LP parts for a SMTA that would be different from a regular SM.

To add more confusion, it could also be a C or an N. Don't confuse the L suffix on a Super M with an L prefix for the Louisville factory. L can also stand for high altitude cylinder head.

According to IH if the tractor came equipped with a factory LP engine it should have an L on the serial number plate. That is a directly from the service manual for Super M series tractors.

Also too by 54 they did not use the "x" suffixes anymore they went to the letter only suffixes. Get Guy Fays Data book, I think you just have the letter series book.
