I recently bought a 48 cub that was not running. It had no fire. I replaced the points and condensor and had the rotor button apart. Now I cannot seem to get the button back in time, there is a mark on the small gear but no marks on the button itself so I have no idea were to set it. This tractor has a magnito. Any advise would be appreciated.

Tubby, Most are off base here, A H4 mag rotor is nothing like a J4 what you need to to is. There is a small line in the rotor material and its runs down to the gear on the rotor and will match up between 2 teeth.. Its exactly opisete the tang that fires on the cap. If you need help I can send you a pic of a j4 rotor with it inscribed. JON

I don't think Gale Roberts was off base, he said exactly the same thing that you just did and I after I seen his post and realized that I had made a mistake and was thinking about a different mag I also posted the same thing that you just posted. I just happen to have no photos of a J4 mag around here.

I posted a picture of an H4 but the J4 does only have one line that you line up 2 dots by. I was thinking of the mag on the a-b-c-h-m which all the Have the H4 as comparted to the J4 that the cub has.

My 1948 Cub with J-4 Magneto has a rotor which has gear teeth on the rotor. The small gear on mine has two teeth with dot markings. The rotor has a line running to the electrode. The line on the rotor goes between the two dots on the small gear on mine. I had mine apart and had the same trouble finding out how to reset it. I hope this helps. I do not claim to be an expert. I hope this will help you.....Gale

If the tractor has not had the distributor removed, you are going to be OK.
remove the plug closest to the radiator.
crank the engine till air blows wour thumb off the hole. turn the engine with a long soda straw stuck down the hole. when the straw is at its highest, the rotor should be just almost past the terminal for that plug. Turning it just a bit more should cause a snapping sound, and the rotor will move farther. That should do it. JimN

On a mag the small gear has one tooth that is shorter than the rest and the other gear has two marks on the face of the button, one for left hand rotation L and one for right R. You will want to line the Shorter tooth on the lower gear up with the tooth on the upper gear that the R on the button points to. That should get you taken care of, if not then your mag is different than any other mag I have ever had apart.

Hope That helps, if not give me a call
