THANKS for the help everybody.Me and dad pulled the engine out today. It went very well.I put a jack under the trans with blocking for safety. The frame rails had the bolts welded in so I hooked my A-frame with chainfall to front bolster and cut frame rails with a torch. Then we put nylon chokers on engine front& rear & remove bolts starting from bottom. The engine slid apart easy by rolling A-frame forwards.I am now going to bolt frame rails back on and build a cradle to bolt to a heavy duty pallet.I just did not want to damage engine as proceeds from sale are going toward restoration costs for my sons Farmall M with many M&W & char-lyn parts. Thanks

Use a good HEAVY DUTY engine hoist. I used a regular automotive hoist with a 12ton hydraulic bottle jack once. The engine fell from the hoist and bent the ram on the jack. Luckily it was only about 6in off the ground, no one or nothing was hurt. Those diesels are heavy. Next time I need to remove one I'm using a 2 post style overhead crane and a chain falls.

Thanks that was the kind of advice I was looking for.Can I leave the side rails on to pull engine? I am going to build a cradle for engine to ship it and was planning on welding to frame rails as they are already welded on.Thanks again Nick

No, the side rails have to come off. They are bolted to the flywheel housing and those same bolts hold the engine rear plate to the flywheel housing too, so they have to come out. Since they are the only support for the bolster, it has to come off too. Easiest way is to leave the bolster attached to the side rails and lift both up with the cherry picker. After you put a little tension on them then you can remove the four bolts that hold the side rails to the flywheel housing.

Locate the two bolts at the TOP of the flywheel housing, under the gas tank, whose heads face the back. Before you take anything else apart, make sure you can loosen them and they are not rusted in place. These are the LAST two bolts you will take out once the engine is supported on a cherry picker. Once you have confirmed that they will come out easily, tighten them back down in place. Disconnect the clutch output shaft from the transmission and then block the tractor in the middle under the clutch. Remove the bolster and side rails. After you do this, then hook the engine with the cherry picker, put tension on it, and then remove the two aforementioned bolts at the top of the flywheel housing and the engine should slide forward and out. Reverse to reassemble. Of course this is just the big things, and assumes you have already disconnected wiring, fuel lines, etc.
