I am looking at a450 diesel that has been sitting outside for about eight years. When he parted it, it was bubbling in radiator, may-be a headgasket,or a cracked head? Sitting outside that long, it may have filled with water, and cracked the block also. What is a fair price? Has a wide front, and fast hitch.

Just thought I'd add that I went to sale on Sat to try for an old 12' drag spring tooth to use around the corral. I got there late. It sold to a scrapper for $12. I found out who bought it and what for and found him later and told him what I wanted it for. He asked what it was worth to me and I told him double the price he paid. He said he could get a lot more for scrap but said he would let it go to me for $50 so I paid him. Now I have to take a trailer back to get it.

Sounds like scrap price whether or not you want to rebuild it which could run thousands. Around here scrap and other things like old cars bring about $200 a ton plus or minus $10. Clean metal of one kind can bring more such as copper. A car or tractor would have to have all fluids removed, gas tank removed and cut in half to verify no fuel, and the tires have to be removed but can be removed after the scale (and later reweighed) if the vehicle is towed in.

Scrappers offer about 15% to 20% of the weight for farmers to clean up their farm yard. Maybe up to 40% if there is some clean and easy to pick up metal. Scrappers have expenses such as cleaning up all fluids & freon, cutting expenses, a tractor or something to lift heavy items, gasoline, etc. and then their time to do all the scrapping plus the hauling. Sometimes they can layer the scrap so they run it across the scale each time for different metals such as old lawn mowers as general scrap, copper, etc. They can also take the time to tear down an old mower with an aluminum block engine so they can sell the block for more as clean aluminum. It is all time intensive though.

It's worth its weight in scrap price, but it's unlikely that the owner will part with it for that much, or it would've been gone years ago.

If it was "parted" I would pay half of what it is worth in its own weight (scrap value). I am sure you intended to say "parked". Eight years in the open is a long time, $500 maybe if it is complete and has only surface rust, no holes or scales.
