Super A clutch adjustment

Trying to get rid of too much free play. When looking through the aces port I can not see the adjusting nuts but they are towards the rear end and not visible.

The pressure plate looks bright and untarnished so I am wondering if rod from the clutch pedal to the adjustment yoke and nuts is bent.

Or is it just a clutch going out?

Appreciate any words of wisdom.

Mike, the REAR of the torque tube, where it's narrow, underneath the pedals. Here's the hole you're looking for. 'Left', here, is toward the rear of the tractor.

The piece between the nuts is an arm of the yoke you see to the left. There is a hole in the yoke into, and through which, the threaded rod can extend if need be. you loosen those nuts, and then turn one or the other, to tighten or loosen the adjustment. Drawing the rod to the rear will loosen the adjustment, and vice-versa. It will become self-evident to you once you're under there and playing with it.

Good job, Pete! I never gave a thought to the hole in the side.

Mike, the hole on the side of the bell that you've been looking through is so you can get a grease gun into the zerk on your throwout bearing. Down below that, on the bottom and a little forward, is an oval shaped hole that may have a cover over it with a threaded end sticking out held by a wingnut or regular nut. That is the forward hole I was talking about.

The hole Pete has the picture of, and the hole you want for adjusting your freeplay is on the underside of the torque tube at the very rear, and doesn't have a cover.

Scotty: There are covers for the clutch adjustment hole, don't know whether IH made them, or some local enterprising sheet metal fabricator. The ones I've seen used the same principle of holding it in place as the bottom of bell housing round cover.

I bought some heavy gauge sheet metal, and was going to fabricate my own. I find mice like that hole on the two tractors I'm not running all winter. The devils have the gaul to use my seat cushions as material for the torque tube nest.

"the gaul to use my seat cushions as material for the torque tube nest"

ROFL!!

A buddy of mine lives up in the northern reaches of Westchester Co., NY. It was in the country when he moved up there. I got lookin' at the little Cub he bought back then, and he's got 1/4" galvanized mesh rigged over every hole on the torque tube and final drives to keep the devil meeses out.

I don't see one listed for the clutch adjustment access hole in the parts book for either of my tractors (BN and SuperC) and I'd have to go out in the rain to measure, but I wonder if the oval cover for the front handhole might be made to fit over the hole in question here.

Pete, thanks a bunch. I saw that and then got misled by the manual. My reading (apparently incorrect) led me on a wild goose chase. It is true that a picture is worth many words.

Thanks again, mike

Which access hole are you looking through for the adjustment? There is the one hole on the bell of the torque tube, nearer the motor, where you can see the clutch cover and flywheel. The access hole for adjusting your free play is at the rear of the torque tube, just forward of the tranny.

I am looking through the large access hole in the very bottom, not the small one on the side where you grease the throw out bearing.
