Farmall 504 Oil Leak in Axle Housing

Hi, I have a Farmall 504 Ser. No. 1132-S-Y that is leaking oil from the left axle housing and the differential housing. Looking in the I&T manual, it appears that the axle housing does not have a seal between it and the differential. So I assume the axle housing is supposed to be oil filled or at least have some oil in it. Am I correct? If so, is there a gasket between the two housings? If not, what do I need to do to fix the leak? Also, what do the Letters S and Y in the Ser. No. denote? Thanks. LaVern

Well I went out yesterday and jacked the tractor up, not quite enough to raise the tire completely off the ground, but darn near it. I figured this should pretty much neutralize the weight on the casting. I was able to get four bolts around the bottom to tighten up some, but the upper ones would not budge. I thought that maybe I was onto something. It didn't help at all. As a matter of fact, after that I foolishly removed a large bead of silicone that I had put on the shoulder between the housing and the differential to act as an external gasket, and it is leaking at a fairly fast rate. About 1 1/2 gals. over night. Now I guess I have to get serious about this.

Concerning one of my earlier postings in this topic.... Do I have to remove the bearing retainer, seals and bearing before removing the housing, or can I just clean up the axle real well and slide the housing and all off the axle?

Thanks for all of your advice.
LaVern

There is a gasket between the axle housing and rear frame on early S/N and an O ring on the later S/N. Yours should have the gasket P/N 360 543 R2.

S = Torque amplifier with provision for 540 RPM IPTO.

Y = 12 GPM hydraulic pump.

Boy that was quick. Thanks a bunch, Sounds like it shouldn't be too bad of a job. Next question, Once I get the wheel off from the axle and the exposed axle cleaned up, is it a matter of just removing the housing bolts and pulling or prying the housing off of the axle? Or do I need to do something the to outer end of the axle housing with the seals and bearing? Thanks.

Well I still need some advice on this job. I have the tire, and hub removed from the axle and have the axle cleaned up using a right angle grinder and a cup wire brush. Though it is not polished, it is down to bare metal with all of the dirt and paint removed. I have the bearing retainer removed from the end of the axle housing, and the bolts that bolt the housing to the differential housing removed. Where do I go from here? The IT manual mentions removing the PTO cover and removing the cap screw from inside the bull gear. Is this the only way to remove the housing? Can the housing be removed from axle without removing the axle?

As I re-read the IT manual it seems to point to the only way of seperating the axle and axle housing is by removing them as a unit and then seperating them. I suppose if I do this I don't have to remove the axle from the axle housing, to replace the gasket or O-ring, whatever the case may be.

As you can tell, I am stuck at this point, and in need of advice.

Thanks. LaVern

Lavern,

Crawl under there with an end wrench and tighten those housing bolts. They tend to loosen over time and ya may not even need to take it apart to fix it.

I've cured 3 or 4 tractors that way. They loosen and all they need is tightened back up.

I have done that several years back, but it didn't seem to help. They didn't seem to budge at all. Maybe if I jack up the tractor and remove the weight from the housing and then give it another try. Can't hurt. Thanks all for the replies. LaVern
