I was going thru the fluids on my 856 and pulled the fill plugs on both axle housings they were over fill like mazemeister had eairlier on the forum with the 826. I didn't drain them out yet because I don't know if I should. Obviously the oil is coming from the transmission so I am thinking they are about the same level as the transmission. Should I drain them out to the fill plugs or will it just ran back in from the transmission? Does it hurt anything to leave them too full?

Second question, The brakes were working just fine when I started plowing yesterday. The left brake started to chatter just like a wet brake does on the J.D.s, then about an hour later the right one started to do the same thing. I still have good brakes on both sides. The the left one has brakes on first press of pedal but the right needs to be pumped once to get braking. These are the dry brakes aren't they. Any ideas?

Thanks, Dan Swanson

if you pull the plugs out of the axel tubes on the bottom and drive it around it will drain the whole system.
It is common practice to run the older IH rears over-full on oil when doing PTO work in the hills to keep the oil level high enough so you don't take the PTO out.
this will also over fill the axel tube,as I recall their is a 1 1/2 inch hole for the oil to drain back into the rear and a 1X2 hole from the rear to the trans.

One thing you might check on the brakes.

There is a slot at the bottom of the drum that needs to be kept open to allow brake dust to fall out.

If you get a build up of brake dust it can cause the chatter.
