I just overhauled my 1948 Cub, Valves and seats resurfaced new valve springs, with Valve clearances set at .013, all new Crank and Rod bearings, new Piston Rings,,new champion D18y Spark plugs set at .025.I got it running but it has no power and sounds like it is late on time but I checked the Magneto all over installed new Points, Condensor, coil, rotor,Cap, and new Spark plugs. It has good spark and I timed it according to the manual. The two center cylinders seem to run colder the end ones like it is not firing as good on the middle cylinders. The center spark plugs feel much cooler to the touch after running. I installed a new kit in Carburetor and set float to the manual specs and have plenty of gas to carburetor. Can anyone tell me what might be my problem. Thanks....Gale

Gale, don't feel like a fool. I was going to suggest the plug wires order as well; and why do you think we all wanted to have you check it? Because we've all done the same thing! Now, you too will be a "genius" when someone has a similar question :P !

Hello Gale,
I would do a compression test to eliminate a valve problem. then I would check your manifold if you are sucking air on the center cyl's it could do this. are the plugs wet on 2 and 3 ? maybe bad wires.
Good Luck Ed

Re-set your valve clearance to .015" cold.

Read Hal's firing order as if you are looking at the cap. No 1 at roughly 2 o'clock.

Make sure your plug wires are in the correct firing order on the mag's cap. Hal

2-1
4-3

PS: You should bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke and then see where the rotor is pointing. It should be at the No1 plug tower on the cap. Did you remove the cam & crankshaft?

I did not remove Camshaft or crankshaft I did an in frame overhaul did not remove cover from front of engine. I have the Spark plug wires in the proper places from the magneto cap to the spark plugs. I am sure it is not due to improper firing order. I am stumped on this. Any other ideas on this are welcome and thanks for any of your help fellows..... Gale

I now feel like a fool as I went out this morning and rechecked the wires from Magneto cap to the Spark Plugs and the two center cylinder wires were reversed. I changed them and now it runs ok, I was sure that I had them right in the first place but I was wrong. Thank you all for your help and you was right the firing order was screwed up..... .Gale

Do those plug wires have copper wire? You need them with a mag. Hal

Sounds like the firing order is messed up.
