When I opened up the 17 GPM pump on the 656 the gear teeth were very eroded, the wear plate 1/2 worn, etc. so I have a replacment pump in hand.
I also opened the piggy back pump to check its condtion. The gear teeth were in good shape BUT there is some pitting and scoring on the aluminum sides of the pump body that the gear teeth run against. (not the wear plate)

#1) Given the tolerances and pressures inside these little wonders I presume there isn't any way for me to fill in these pits?
#2) I think they are $500+ new and $300 rebuilt and I'm guessing the rebuilts might have the same problems as mine or would they machine them and then use a slightly larger gear size?

As always, thanks for your expertice and experience.

Then I'm putting it together as it is (with the $88! seal kit) and we'll see how she lifts. Thank you for the reply.
