anybody ever heard of replacing the ring and pinion on a full size tractor,38 inch tires, with one from a utility tractor of the same family, say with 34 inch tires, to get more speed. Wonder if its fesable. Bernie

The reason I would like more speed is, when on tractor rides it would be nice not to have to run at ful throttle to keep up. Just idle along at half speed. Lots less gas too. Thanks Bernie Steffen

I imagine they are interchangeable, but other than getting a faster high gear (which may not be safe) you are going to mess up the speed of the other gears and have less power in each one. The IH utility tractors generally have 28 inch tires. The W series may have 34's, not sure.

Also, if you ever want to sell it, you need to find someone who wants a messed up tractor. But, you can do as you please. IH did the same effect with the AV. Replaced 24 inch rears with 36 inch to make a high clearance tractor, and left the gearing alone -- primarily for cultivating tall crops. Probably worked ok for that, I have never driven one. But, looking at the speeds it looks like it only left one decent tillage gear, others were too fast with less power.
