the manual on the int mdl#3444 says pistons in early carbureted engines have an additional ring grove below the piston pin. do not install a ring in this groove. is this ring necessary in a diesel engine? what is it for? is it just another oil ring?

Diesel engines are subject to dramatically higher compression than gas engines, and the ring technology still alows some compression bypass, and deposits in diesels. Ring structure and plating methods were improved in the mid century years, and the reduced drag of the lower ring was considered to be important enough to eliminate them on the gas engines. The ring is often called a scraper ring and contributes to oil control, and deposit buildup. Thus all rings should be installed on diesel engines. JimN
